Sony is working on a new handheld gaming console that can run PlayStation 5 games on the go.

As reported by Bloomberg, the hardware is designed to compete against Nintendo and Microsoft in the handheld games market. However, the report noted any such console could be “years away from launch".

The new portable gaming device could allow native gameplay rather than relying on Wi-Fi streaming, building on its PlayStation Portal which was originally meant to be a standalone device, as per Bloomberg.

Handheld gaming on the rise

The move could potentially broaden Sony's audience and improve accessibility, marking a return to the portable gaming space after the discontinuation of its previous handheld consoles like the PS Vita and PlayStation Portable.

Nintendo is set to release the successor to its Switch console next year, while Microsoft is reportedly working on its own handheld Xbox prototype, although it won't be available for a few years.

The handheld gaming market has also seen growth with new entries like Valve's Steam Deck and Asus' ROG Ally, expanding the PC-platform presence in this category.
